World Thinking Day

In school many of the girls from Primary 1 to Primary 7 turned out in their Rainbow and Brownie Uniforms to recognise 'World Thinking Day'. On 22 February each year, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from lots of different countries pledge to be friends and to understand each other. This date was first celebrated in 1927 and marks the joint birthday of World Chief Guide Olave Baden-Powell and her husband, the founder of the Guides, Robert Baden-Powell.

In the United Kingdom, a joint service is held by Girlguiding UK and the Scout Association in Westminster Abbey, London. During the service, wreaths are laid on the Baden-Powell memorial stone.

Nursery Building Progress 17/2

The construction of the Nursery Unit is moving on a great pace despite the rather unpleasant spell of weather recently.

The main shape of the structure is now complete and the addition of the roof trusses have helped us to 'see' the plans become a reality.

Safety of the children during this whole process is of paramount importance and the builders have been extremely vigilant. We thank them for their support in this matter.

More photos will follow soon as the scaffolding comes down and the site tidies you'll hopefully soon see the full extent of this exciting new facet to the life and work of Waringstown Primary School.

Nursery Building Progress

Building progress is making excellent progress thanks to the good weather. The access to the site is visible from the school avenue. By keeping all heavy traffic away from the playground we of course have kept safety as our top priority but it has also enabled the contractors to work unhindered by school routines and outdoor play.

As you can see from the photos the site preparation is complete and the builders have the foundations in place. The concrete is due to be poured on Monday. This will mean that later next week we'll see some block work.

Hopefully by our next update you'll actually see the structure taking shape.

School Christmas Assembly

Primary 1 to Primary 7 all enjoyed watching the Christmas Story during a school assembly in December. The journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem was acted out so well by children from P3, P4 and P7, their celebration assembly also included the baby Jesus in the Stable, with the animals, shepherds and wise men.

The whole school were involved in helping with the singing and action songs. A huge thanks goes to Mrs McElhinney and Mrs McClelland for organising and preparing the children in this Assembly.

Christmas Post Box

The total amount raised to date is £266.17 and with donations received at the School Carol Service on Monday 10 December, a cheque for £1000 has been forwarded to The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Belfast as our annual contribution on behalf of our school community.

Charlene's Project

On Wednesday the 12th December all children from P1 to P7 had a Sponsored Walk to raise money for Charlene's Project.

Charlenes Project Sponsored Walk 2012

This money will go towards buying new books for the Hidden Treasure School in Uganda, which was founded by Charlene Barr, a past pupil of Waringstown Primary School. Charlene sadly passed away in October 2010, her mother Mrs Janice Barr and sister Rebecca joined the staff and children on the Sponsored Walk.

The whole school enjoyed the morning. We as a school feel extremely privileged that we are able to help and support such a special and beneficial Project.

The amount raised so far is £2123

Parish gives Family Time Books

On Wednesday 7 November, Julie Currie (Church of Ireland's Diocesan Children's Worker) and the Revd Bryan Martin (Rector of Donaghcloney Parish) came in to school to give out the 'Family Time' Books to every child.

Julie was able to share the story of Bassets Jelly Babies – did you know that each one has a special symbol on it, telling the story of the Bible? The children loved the books and so did the teachers, (some of the devotions might reappear as Assembly lessons).

We are very grateful to the parish and the Rev Martin for this very generous gift.

Remembrance Assembly - Friday 9th November 2012

Waringstown Primary School held their special Remembrance Assembly on Friday 9th November 2012. This Assembly took place in the Assembly Hall. All classes wore their poppies.

Some children from Primary 5 reminded the boys and girls that the Poppy is a symbol of REMEMBRANCE. The children spoke about how we were remembering all those who lost their lives in wars, particularly World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) and also in all other situations of conflict throughout the world today.

The Act of Remembrance was lead by our Principal Mr Kennedy and attended by our whole school community.
